Road Test and Review: Volkswagen Polo GT 1.2 TSI

This one’s for the enthusiasts. If you wonder how on earth a 1.2 litre engine is going to impress an enthusiast, digest this: the new Polo GT is powered by a turbo-charged direct injection TSI petrol engine that develops a mighty 105PS and 174 Nm of torque, offering better performance than the discontinued 1.6 litre Polo. Those who cribbed about the Polo 1.2 being underpowered and the 1.6 being defunct would both find solace in the new Polo TSI.
Design
We love the Polo for its classic, sober design and there are not many changes that make the new Polo different from its predecessor. However, on the exterior, the new Polo TSI gets headlamps with black finish, GT badging on the front grille, new alloy wheels and GT TSI badging on the boot lid as well as the C pillar.

Since the wing is his trademark symbol, Scott modified a Smart ForTwo by sticking a pair on its haunch, along with swaddling the interior in leather.

Space Saving Small Cars.

Space Saving Small Cars.

With petrol prices continuing to increase and cars becoming more expensive to run, people are turning to small cars to solve their problems. These cars have gained incredible popularity due to their compact size, cost and fuel efficiency. These cars have contributed in a major way to the modern car industry and almost all of the major manufacturers around the world offer a range of compact vehicles.

The size of the car ranges from 4400mm and 4750mm long for convertibles, 4100mm and 4450mm long for hatchbacks. Small family cars based on sports utility vehicle design range from 4400mm to 4750mm in the international based models and for the U.S. models it is 4200mm to 4500mm. The considerations of compact cars in Japan are under certain conditions and they are as follows: the vehicle needs to be 3.4m long, 1.48m wide, 2m height with an engine capacity of 660cc to 2000cc, 4.7m long, 1.7m wide, and 2m height. There are no special considerations for hatchbacks, minivans, SUVs or CUVs. They run on either diesel or petrol with an engine capacity of 1.5 litres to 2.4 litres, some are 1.3 litres to 1.4 litres units for economy models, within an absolute range of 100 bph and 170 bph.

In the year 1950, the compact class was introduced, built on a 2500mm wheelbase and to it were added hardtops, hatchback and station wagon designs. The compact term was coined by the American motor industry, and is now used all over the world. It was between the 1958 and 1960 when modern compact cars were greatly expanded. During the 1960s small vehicles evolved into slightly smaller versions with 6 cylinder engines, with two-bench six-passenger sedan but were among the smallest in North America.

Consumers today seek vehicles in the U.K. that are fuel efficient as well as fun to drive and for this reason the sale of small cars are at an all time high. Manufacturers are coming up with new ideas and innovative designs in this sector which is proving extremely popular. According to information in 2010 these smaller versions of cars made up about one third of the overall car sales.

Over the next few years, with fuel prices expected to steadily increase even more, the sale of small cars is set to rocket. Not only do small cars save you money in terms of buying them, running them and fuelling them, buy they save a lot of space on the driveway and in the garage.

Introduction

The Indian automotive industry has emerged as a 'sunrise sector' in the Indian economy. India is emerging as one of the world's fastest growing passenger car markets and second largest two wheeler manufacturer. It is also home for the largest motor cycle manufacturer and fifth largest commercial vehicle manufacturer.
India is emerging as an export hub for sports utility vehicles (SUVs). The global automobile majors are looking to leverage India's cost-competitive manufacturing practices and are assessing opportunities to export SUVs to Europe, South Africa and Southeast Asia. India can emerge as a supply hub to feed the world demand for SUVs.
India also has the largest base to export compact cars to Europe. Moreover, hybrid and electronic vehicles are new developments on the automobile canvas and India is one of the key markets for them. Global and Indian manufacturers are focussing their efforts to develop innovative products, technologies and supply chains.
The automotive plants of global automakers in India rank among the top across the world in terms of their productivity and quality. Top auto multinational companies (MNCs) like Hyundai, Toyota and Suzuki rank their Indian production facilities right on top of their global pecking order.

Key Statistics

The amount of cumulative foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow into the automobile industry during April 2000 to January 2013 was worth US$ 7,653 million, amounting to 4 per cent of the total FDI inflows (in terms of US$), as per data published by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce.
The Indian small and light commercial vehicle segment is expected to more than double by 2015-16 and grow at 18.5 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the next five years, according to a report titled, 'Strategic Assessment of Small and Light Commercial Vehicles Market in India' by Frost & Sullivan.
The light commercial vehicles (LCV) market - both passenger and goods carrier is estimated to register a sales growth of around 20 per cent during FY 2012-FY 2015, as per a RNCOS report titled, "India LCV Market Outlook".
India is the world's second-largest heavy commercial vehicle market. It is anticipated that the sales of medium and heavy commercial (M&HC) goods carriers will increase at a CAGR of more than 10.5 per cent during 2011-12 to 2014-15.

Slowdown hits auto companies production.

Slowdown hits auto companies production.

NEW DELHI: The economic slowdown is taking its toll on the Indian auto industry, once seen as the world's most promising by global automakers, who banked on the market to counter the slowdown in Europe and US. Slowing growth has dampened sentiments of buyers, who are reluctant to engage in new purchases at a time when interest rates and fuel prices remain high. The result — output cuts across segments and new investment plans being put off.

Indicating that tough times are here for long, companies have started slashing production, which is alarming considering the ripple effect of the move on allied industries like auto components and retail outlets. And, the downturn has also hit other key segments like medium-and heavy-commercial (M&HCV) vehicles and two-wheelers.

The coming months are expected to be even tougher. The car industry has seen four consecutive months of decline in production (year-on-year). A severe crunch in demand for petrol cars has hit the segment badly, and petrol capacity is lying idle at factories as inventories pile up at dealerships.

In latest car models

In latest car models, it’s not just what’s under the hood that counts.

As the nation’s automakers display their wares at the Washington Auto Show this week, many aim to sell attendees on the technology inside the cars as much as their sleek exteriors and powerful engines.
From navigation systems to smartphone apps to Internet connections, consumer technologies are becoming a standard feature in cars at any price point. As a result, they’ve become the latest way a carmaker can differentiate itself from its competitors.
“In the past, we’ve always been focused on what was specifically automotive,” said Jim Buczkowski, director in research and innovation at Ford Motor Co. “The automobile [was] a bit separated from other environments. The rubber tires contact the road, and that’s about it. Today, everything is becoming connected.”

Auto industry’s latest green tech

Auto industry’s latest green technology making its way to Washington.

A luxury sports car that runs on electricity, a sedan that monitors tire pressure, and a computer system that adjusts an engine’s air flow — all designed by different companies, but all designed with the same two goals in mind:
Saving gas and helping the environment.
Introduced by Fisker, Nissan and Fiat, respectively, those innovations were among the 10 finalists for the 2013 Green Car Technology Award, which were presented on Thursday atthe Washington Auto Show. These aren’t lofty, futuristic concepts, either; each of the nominated technologies has been built into vehicles that have already hit the market.
Eight carmakers were represented, with Ford Motor Company placing three entries among the finalists. Tesla and Fisker make the only two electric vehicles on the list, while several larger automakers were recognized for bringing green technologies from their hybrid fleets to their conventional gas-powered cars.

Ferrari 458 Italia Manettino

Ferrari 458 Italia Manettino, Launch Control and Interior

The 458 Italia is equipped with a racing manettino switch leading toward more sporting set ups and giving the driver a wider selection of electronic controls parameters. The ICE setting saw in the F430 has been removed, while the CT setting has been added in order to deactivate the traction control and at the same time maintain the stability control. There are five different manettino positions and conditions: Low Grip, Sport, Race, CT and CTS. Low Grip setting provides maximum grip under all driving conditions, and it is particularly suited for low grip surfaces. The emphasis is on comfort and stability without compromising the handling. Sport is the best setting for day to day driving and guarantees great safety under good grip. Race is particularly suitable for track driving providing maximum performance and stability in optimal grip situations. CT helps the driver improving his driving skills in safety, by keeping active the stability control. It allows over-steer right to the edge of the car is limits and guarantees enhanced driving pleasure and fun behind the wheel, particularly on the track. Under CTS setting, both stability and traction control systems are deactivated, giving the driver maximum freedom and control on the track. No electronic systems intervene on the vehicle stability with the exception of E-diff3 and ABS.

On the 458 Italia, the driver can decouple the suspension damping from the electronic configuration selected on the manettino. The suspension decoupling button offers improved filtering of uneven road surfaces in order to improve performance and handling on uneven broken surfaces, such as the ones at the Norburgring race track.

The launch control button is instead designed to offer the best possible acceleration from standstill. It delivers the maximum possible torque to the ground and prevents wheel spin as the car accelerates away. Its activation is indicated in the instrument panel. To start using the Launch control, the manettino must be selected on race, CT or CTS setting. With the car still at standstill, the driver then needs to put the gearbox in manual, selects first gear, pushes the launch control, presses the accelerator pedal and then releases the brake pedal.

The stylistic interior choices developed by Ferrari Centro Stile reflect a functional, ergonomic cockpit design. The driver is set in the center of a streamlined and intuitive layout, which is very much in line with the marquees signature styling cues.
